Treemendous first sprung from the ground in 2008. Since then, with Treemendous sponsor the Mazda Foundation, we have worked with more than 45 schools from the top of the North Island to the bottom of the South to create amazing native gardens and outdoor classrooms.
Four New Zealand schools are chosen each year to have their grounds improved and enhanced through the implementation of their ideas, be it a lizard garden, a substantial native planting, creation of our outdoor classroom, creating bird habitats or all of these and more! It’s a prize worth $10,000 and all New Zealand primary and intermediate schools can apply. Such is the success of Treemendous that it was a finalist in the 2015 and 2017 Green Ribbon Awards.
In 2017 we celebrate 10 years of Treemendous with the Mazda Foundation. And to celebrate, for the first time in the history of the Treemendous School Makeover programme, we completed an extra makeover so that five lucky schools each received $10,000 to create their own outdoor education space.
Reporoa School (Bay of Plenty), Nelson Central School (Nelson), Houghton Valley School (Wellington), Leithfield School (Canterbury) and Alexandra Primary School (Otago) have each been transformed by the Treemendous team with a native tree planting makeover. Check out their stories on the Treemendous website here, or on our Facebook page.
We’re also thrilled to announce the 10 finalists for 2018 Treemendous. Congratulations to Anchorage Park Primary School (Auckland), Beckenham School (Christchurch), Clifton School (Bulls), Howick Primary (Auckland), Kerikeri Primary School (Northland), Rangeview Intermediate School (Auckland), St Leonard’s School (Dunedin), Tahatai Coast School (Bay of Plenty), Te Kura Kaupapa Maori O Manawatu (Palmerston North), Trentham School (Wellington).
